Chapter 1557: Why Am I The One Who’s Always Getting Hurt?

“Not bad.” A moment later, the goat-headed man’s face returned to normal, and he looked down on the curled up Night Bodhisattva. “Do you realize your mistake now?”

Shaking all over, the Night Bodhisattva said weakly, “I do... I won’t do it again!”

“Mm. A small punishment this may be, I expect this to be the last time you make this mistake.” The goat-headed man’s voice was still refined and gentle, but his words chilled the Night Bodhisattva to her core. “Otherwise, no one can save you.”

“Yes! Yes! Thank you for showing mercy, envoy!” The Night Bodhisattva hurriedly replied.

“You did one thing well though.”

It was at this moment the goat-headed man replied, “Over one hundred thousand people are gathered in the Nanjiang Royal Court. In this regard, you have fulfilled my lord’s mission properly. I will report it as it is to my lord. I’m sure she will reward you handsomely for your efforts.”

The Night Bodhisattva pretended to be delighted by his praise. “Thank you, envoy! It is this minor god’s duty. It doesn’t deserve your compliment.”

“Mistake is mistake, merit is merit. My lord is one who both punishes mistakes and rewards merits.”

The goat-headed man replied, “Complete the altar post haste. Do not be lazy.”

“Yes, envoy! This minor god will not disappoint you or the lord!”

That was what she said, but she was really anxious. After all, it sounded like the goat-headed man was about to leave very soon. However, those two still hadn’t made a peep yet. Did they really miss her message? Or had something happened to them? Whatever the reason behind their absence, this was not the outcome she was hoping for. After all, she was the one who was going to suffer the consequences in the end.

What could she do? Her life was in their hands. It was her own fault that she was weak; that she allowed another to master her life.

If something went wrong, who should shoulder the blame if not her?

What do I do? What do I do?

The Night Bodhisattva was burning with anxiety when suddenly, a voice rang inside her head. “Ask him what is the use of the altar?”

It’s the man’s voice!

She immediately relaxed. As it turned out, they were already present.

Although she did not understand why they hadn’t taken action and captured the goat-headed man as they originally planned, it did not matter. The important thing was that they were here.

Now, it wasn’t her fault no matter who came out ahead of this clash.

The goat-headed man asked suddenly, “You seem to be concerned about something, Night Bodhisattva. What is it?”

“It’s nothing.” The Night Bodhisattva pretended to deny his observation before saying hesitantly, “Actually... Can I ask you something, envoy?”

The goat-headed man seemed to be in a good mood. He said, “Ask away.”

The Night Bodhisattva asked, “What is the sacrificial altar for?”

The goat-headed man shot her a meaningful look. “It’s an altar for living sacrifices. You figured this out a long time ago, didn’t you?”

“You are wise, envoy. I did wonder if that is the case.”

The Night Bodhisattva did not reject it. She continued in an obsequious tone, “I’m just curious what my lord is planning by sacrificing hundreds of thousands of lives.”

“I suppose it does not matter if I tell you. It is to summon our god to this world.” The goat-headed man’s eyes flickered with zealotry.

“Our god?” The Night Bodhisattva exclaimed in realization. So, the real reason they wanted to build this altar and sacrifice all these lives was to summon a greater god. Well, no, it was probably a demon. Even if it was a god, it could only be an evil god. After all, no good god would require the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of lives to summon.

“May I know who our god is?”

“Our god is the one god. They are the god of gods, the demon of demons, the evil of evils, the celestial of celestials, and the spirit of spirits. He is the greatest, most supreme, and most immortal existence since ancient times.”

The goat-headed man declared with incredible fervor. He was raising his arms high and speaking of his “god” in a reverent and reserved voice.

“May I know their title? This minor god would like to join him as well!” The Night Bodhisattva pretended to be excited.

“You?” The goat-headed man lowered his head and shot her a scornful look. “You think you deserve to follow our god?”

Why not? I’m a god myself, alright? And if my master hadn’t ordered me to pry some information out of you, I would never have said such a thing!

The Night Bodhisattva wanted to spit on the goat-headed man’s face, but of course she didn’t dare to do so or say what she really thought. She could only put on an awkward smile and pretend to be disappointed.

“No need to be disappointed.” Seeing her downcast expression, the goat-headed man offered her words of consolation, “You are the one building the sacrificial altar and gathering all the offerings. Your merit is definitely big. When my god descends, I am sure they will grant you his boon and make you their follower.”

The Night Bodhisattva was overjoyed to hear this. “Thank you, envoy! This minor god will do her best to facilitate their descension to this world!”

“Mm. Work hard and don’t disappoint my lord.” The goat-headed man nodded in satisfaction. The flowers on his horns fell off, but they did not land on the ground. Instead, they flew around him while accompanied by beautiful butterflies.

“I will take my leave now.” As he said this, he took a step forward and grew a little transparent. Three steps later, he had disappeared like a mirage, leaving behind only a mountain of petals and butterflies.

For a time, the barren, lonely hill looked as beautiful as a celestial realm.

This only lasted a moment though. A gust of wind blew, and both the petals and the butterflies scattered just like that. It was like a Nanke dream.

The Night Bodhisattva was not in the mood to enjoy the scenery though. She let out a long sigh of relief.

The life of a double-crosser was seriously strenuous, but at least she had overcome this hurdle.

“You did well.” It was at this moment Ye Qing’s voice rang inside the Night Bodhisattva’s head again.

Pleased, she was just about to speak when Ye Qing continued, “But don’t talk, and act natural. That envoy hasn’t left yet. I suggest that you head home immediately.”

The Night Bodhisattva’s heart skipped a beat, but her outward appearance was perfect. She quickly transformed into a wisp of dark light and slipped back into the hill.

An incense stick later, a butterfly flew out of a bush and took a transparent silhouette under the moonlight.

It was none other than the goat-headed man.

“I guess it was just my paranoia talking. The Night Bodhisattva is not compromised.”

The goat-headed man muttered to himself before dissipating into nothing. The butterfly also flew into the sky and slowly melted in the moonlight.

His voice was scattered by the wind, and silence soon returned to the hill. The birds weren’t flying, and the insects weren’t chirping. The only sound that could be heard was the grass rustling to the wind.

About an hour later, a black petal deep within the bush soundless scattered into nothing.

Five hundred kilometers away and standing in a clump of flowers, the goat-headed man was holding a yellow flower elegantly and confidently.

When the petal dissolved into nothing, he smiled self-derisively and muttered, “It’s just my paranoia.”

He turned the yellow flower in his hand, and the petals fell off. However, more colorful petals were rushing up into the air from below.

For a time, colorful petals were dancing all over the place. It looked beautiful.

By the time the petals landed on the ground, the goat-headed man was nowhere to be found.
