Chapter 1553: It’s So Unfair!
“So, you don’t know that the King of Nanjiang currently in the court is a fake.”
Feng Qingyou did not try to deceive the Night Bodhisattva. She told her the truth immediately.
The Night Bodhisattva exclaimed in surprise, “She’s a fake? I... I don’t know that. Really.”
After waiting for a long time and receiving no answer, she thought she had angered her captors and added in a hurry, “It must be the mysterious woman who woke me up from my slumber. She must be the one who took the real King of Nanjiang! It has to be!”
Feng Qingyou asked after a moment of silence, “Do you know why she wanted to capture the King of Nanjiang?”
The Night Bodhisattva shook her head. “I don’t know. I really don’t know.”
Neither Ye Qing nor Feng Qingyou said anything. This answer fell within their expectations.
It was at this moment the Night Bodhisattva said, “But if you capture her, then I’m sure you’ll find out the answer!”
Ye Qing asked, “Oh? Do you know where she is right now?”
“No. She hasn’t appeared before me again after she woke me up.” The Night Bodhisattva answered, “However, she would dispatch an envoy to inspect the altar’s construction progress or issue me some missions every once in a while.”
“If you catch them, I’m sure you’ll be able to trace them back to their hideout. I will aid you in capturing them if you let me.”
“The mysterious woman has applied a restriction on you. She can literally kill you with a single thought if she wants to. Are you seriously telling me that you’ll betray her?”
A hint of disdain crept into Ye Qing’s voice, “Or are you trying to buy time and trick us? Are you planning to work together with your cooperators to defeat us, or perhaps you’re hoping we’ll take each other out so you can be free and claim all the spoils?”
“I-I wouldn’t dare...”
Large beads of sweat dripped down the Night Bodhisattva’s forehead as shock and fear gripped her mind. The thought had, in fact, crossed her mind.
She wasn’t stupid. She might not understand what her captors were trying to find out at the beginning, but the latter questions were direct enough that she had more or less guessed their true intentions. As it turned out, they hadn’t captured her just because she happened to be in their way after all. It was because they were trying to uncover information regarding the King of Nanjiang and the altar. The King of Nanjiang especially was important to them.
That was why she offered to capture the mysterious figure.
Besides that, the thought of conspiring against her captors had crossed her mind. She had thought to screw up on purpose so that the mysterious woman would notice and come to save her. Even better, she was hoping that they would take each other out so she would be rid of both of them.
After all, neither party was good in her eyes. She wanted them both to be dead.

Unfortunately, her thoughts were seen through practically immediately. Just what had happened to this world while she was asleep? Since when did everyone become so cunning? Before, the mysterious woman had easily wrapped her slimy fingers around her in just a few sentences.
These two were even worse than her.
Tens thousand years ago, she was an all-powerful deity countless people worshiped and looked up to. Today, she felt as pure and innocent as a lamb. Just how was this fair?!
If she was given another chance, she would rather remain in her sleep and never awaken.
This world was just way too dangerous[1]!
“You’re a smart girl. I’m sure you figured out our motives already. Unfortunately, excess intelligence can sometimes lead to a swift and untimely demise.”
The Night Bodhisattva was sweating buckets when the voice continued, “Don’t you agree, Night Bodhisattva?”
“Y-Yes, senior, you are totally right.” The Night Bodhisattva stammered out in terror. If the chains weren’t impeding her movements right now, she would be kowtowing in submission already. “I... I...”
“I was just complimenting your intelligence, and now you’ve suddenly gone foolish? How disappointing.” The playful voice rang again, but this time it was tinged with scorn and impatience.
The Night Bodhisattva felt a shiver and hurriedly said, “I understand! I will do whatever you say! I swear I’ll never betray you! I—”
“No need to swear.”
The Night Bodhisattva was both surprised and delighted to hear this. Her captors turned out to be surprisingly good people after all.
Then, she heard the next sentence, “These days, not even a dog will fall for something like that.”
Before the Night Bodhisattva could react, a wisp of black and white qi and a penta-colored auspicious cloud slipped into her mind at the same time.
Suddenly, the black and white qi took the form of a mysterious talisman and imprinted itself onto her mind. As for the penta-colored auspicious cloud, it spread out and enveloped the restriction left behind by the mysterious woman bit by bit. It did not make contact with it though.
Heavens, what a life. I hadn’t even removed the restriction left behind by that mysterious woman, and now two more had joined the mix. I must be the most pitiful deity in this entire goddamn world!
The Night Bodhisattva wanted to cry, really.
“We just left two imprints on you. The first imprint stops you from harboring traitorous thoughts. If you dare to play both sides or turn against us, it will make you wish you were dead.” The voice replied, “Trust me, it will be so, so much worse than what you’re experiencing right now.”
“Yes... yes...” The Night Bodhisattva sweated like crazy. This hell was already the worst she had ever experienced in her life. She could not imagine something hundreds, even thousands of times worse than that.
Of course, it could just be a lie. Still, she did not want to tempt fate even a little.
Frankly, she wasn’t afraid to die. She was afraid she couldn’t die.
This wasn’t cowardice. This was simply experience telling her not to be fucking stupid.
Just when the Night Bodhisattva was about to give up on life and do whatever the hell her captors wanted, she heard this:
“The second imprint protects you. If the restriction in your mind ever activates for whatever reason, the second imprint will keep you from dying.”
“Huh?” The Night Bodhisattva was surprised at first. Then, she dared to allow herself some hope. Did this mean she didn’t need to die when all this was over?
As if they could guess her thoughts, the voice replied, “As long as you do as we say, as long as you help us capture that mysterious woman and figure out her objective, then we promise we will protect you and keep you safe.”
“If you do well, we could even release you and return you your freedom.”
“Really?” The pleasant surprise came out of nowhere. It was no wonder she had trouble believing it.
“What’s wrong? Don’t believe us?” The voice’s tone grew a little playful once more. “Tell me, do you distrust our ability, or is it our honesty that you’re doubting?”
“I-I wouldn’t dare!”
The Night Bodhisattva came to and hurriedly replied, “Of course I believe in you, seniors. The two of you are greater than gods. How can I not believe in you two?”
“Do not worry, seniors. This god swears to perform her duties even if it kills her a thousand times over.”
“Good. For your sake, I hope you’re a woman of your word.”
A gentle voice replied, and the Night Bodhisattva discovered that the fleshy chains inside her body were pulling out and withdrawing back to the walls. The next moment, a sudden vertigo struck her, and her vision turned black for a moment.
When light returned to her vision once more, she discovered that she was kneeling inside a room. Instead of cold, monotonous limestone, she was looking at a set of traditional furniture. Rays of sunlight were pouring through the windows and illuminating the floor, the teaware, and the furniture. Parts of the light were scattering into a rainbow.
