Book 3, Chapter 233: Intersect

The motorcade was formed of security guards tasked with escorting Lei Guangcheng to Central City. From this alone, it was clear just how greatly the Cult Investigation Bureau in Central City valued him.

Wu Han had been listening to the jokes playing on the radio when he turned around to look. Then, he whistled, “Wow, that’s a crazy lineup. Is that the person you’re waiting for?”

Chen Chuan nodded.

Once the motorcade drew closer, an armored limousine stopped next to Chen Chuan’s car, and its window wound down to show Lei Guangcheng sitting at the back.

Beside him was a man in his thirties. He wore goggles and was a Third Limit martial artist sent by the Cult Investigation Bureau to ensure Lei Guangcheng’s safety.

When Chen Chuan looked over, the person felt as if he had been stabbed with needles, and he instinctively straightened his body as surprise appeared on his face. Chen Chuan gave him a friendly nod, and the person quickly returned it.

“We’ve set up a domain here, so you can connect with us with your Realm Passes,” Lei Guangcheng said.

“Okay.” Chen Chuan grabbed his Realm Pass and put it on. Soon, he entered the motorcade’s regional domain channel, so they could contact each other and everyone would be immediately alerted if something went wrong.

Then, Chen Chuan said to Wu Han and Wei Dong, “Put yours on and try them out.”

After much fiddling, they finally got the Realm Passes on, and Chen Chuan dragged them into a subchannel under his own name before setting them on listening mode in the main one.

That way, the two could hear the others but not be heard by them.

Chen Chuan spoke to Lei Guangcheng a little. Once they were sure that nothing was amiss, they let the constables at the checkpoint inspect them again. Then, they continued driving down the road.

Wu Han and Wei Dong found the Realm Passes an incredibly novel experience. This was the first time they could talk to someone like this, so they kept chatting with each other happily.

Chen Chuan could understand that. Those who had never used the Realm Passes always acted like that. If he hadn’t come from a world where communication methods were well-developed, he would have reacted the same way the first time he wore his Realm Pass.

“By the way, you two need to be on guard later,” Chen Chuan said.

Wu Han perked up and stopped staring at the screen of his Realm Pass. He leaned forward and asked, “Is something going to happen?”

“I’m not sure, but it might,” Chen Chuan said.

Wu Han and Wei Dong exchanged glances and could see eagerness in each other’s eyes. Sitting in the car without doing anything was boring since they could only listen to the programs on the radio. It would be much better if they could get involved in something.

“If something does happen, let me fight the strong ones. You can deal with the others as you see fit, but be careful,” Chen Chuan said.

“Don’t worry, Chen Chuan. We know our own abilities the best,” Wu Han said with a much more serious expression.

He had gone out on plenty of missions with Wei Dong and always fought at the front lines. If he did not pay attention, did not react fast enough, or couldn’t judge the enemy’s strength well, he wouldn’t have been able to survive until now, even if he had been far stronger than he was now.

They didn’t just charge to the front lines blindly. They would still assess the situation and search for the best way to attack.

The motorcade drove down the public road. Even after more than four hours passed, nothing happened. At this point, it was almost the afternoon.

Dawncall flew alongside the motorcade. Chen Chuan had tested it before. Even though Dawncall had yet to reach adulthood, it had plenty of stamina and could fly for around nine hours at a certain speed.

With Dawncall in the sky, Chen Chuan had an extra pair of eyes above and could detect certain situations ahead of time.

From the ground, Dawncall looked like a large black dot in the sky, so most people wouldn’t pay any attention to it. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to do anything to it, since it was too far away from them.

The sunlight in the afternoon was bright, and the road was deserted aside from the motorcade. The repeating scenery was making everyone sluggish. Just then, they heard a chirp from the sky.

Birds often flew past this region, so the sound didn’t stand out, but Chen Chuan knew that something was about to happen. He put his hand on his Realm Pass. “Mr. Lei, we need to be careful up ahead.”

Once he said that, the security advisor next to Lei Guangcheng notified the entire motorcade without any hesitation, and all the armed personnel went on high alert.

Soon, they saw a motorcade coming toward them with a few large transport vehicles among them. This was a rare sight on the public road, especially coming from Central City.

Two of the armored cars left Lei Guangcheng’s motorcade and sped up. They passed Chen Chuan’s car and headed to the motorcade ahead of them.

The two armored cars had monitoring equipment that allowed them to detect whether the cars in front had any domain lockdown equipment or domain interference entities. If they had, the motorcade might be a problem for them, and they would immediately send a signal to the cars at the back as a warning.

But nothing was out of the ordinary. The motorcade ahead didn’t even slow down. The drivers just gave them a few curious glances before looking back at the road.

“Can you recognize them?” the security advisor asked the team members.

“Based on the license plate number and emblem, they might be from United Might,” one of them answered.

Chen Chuan’s eyes flickered with an unidentifiable emotion. United Might’s main businesses were outsourcing security guards and providing cross-regional transport services. It was normal for them to appear on the public road.

But in order to fight against Zhao Qian, Chen Chuan had done his homework on the company. Their businesses were usually between Central Cities. They seldom went to peripheral cities.

The road they were on only headed to Yangzhi City. They could go to Farsight Harbor if they headed east from Yangzhi City, but it would have been better to go through Oceanway Harbor if they wanted to transport goods. There was no need for them to take a huge detour through Yangzhi City.

Chen Chuan mentioned it to Lei Guangcheng.

The cars at the front of the motorcade passed them by. It really did look like there was nothing wrong with them.

A moment later, Lei Guangcheng said, “I’ve spoken to Mr. Yao. He said that he has already made preparations.”

Chen Chuan nodded.

They continued onward for thirty minutes without issue. If this went on, they would reach the last checkpoint in less than half an hour and enter Central City.

While they wouldn’t be completely safe there, they could connect with the city’s communication channel, and the Resolution Department’s law enforcers stationed all over the city would rush over should any problems arise. After all, their main job was to protect government officials like Lei Guangcheng.

Just then, Chen Chuan heard Dawncall chirp again. This time, its call was short and urgent. He didn’t see anything ahead of them, but he believed that Dawncall had noticed something abnormal. Without any hesitation, he said, “Mr. Lei, I think we should stop.”

Lei Guangcheng trusted Chen Chuan as well, so he immediately asked for them to stop.

While the escorts didn’t notice anything amiss, based on the fact that Chen Chuan had managed to notice the motorcade earlier made them inclined to believe that he saw something this time as well. For safety’s sake, they would rather wait a little while.

If nothing happened, that would be great, but if they were about to be in trouble, it was important to get ready for it in advance.

Hence, the entire motorcade slowed down before stopping. Only the two cars at the front didn’t stop. They went ahead to scout the situation.

***

Around three kilometers ahead were two squads lying in ambush on either side of the public road. They were hiding in pits they had dug ahead of time and were watching the motorcade through binoculars.

They noticed the motorcade suddenly come to a stop and two cars drive forward by themselves. They didn’t know what was going on, so they used hand gestures to notify the people hiding further back. They had a telegram station and informed Ferris Wheel about it.

After waiting a while, they received an order.

They were not to wait any longer, but to attack immediately.

***

The people in the two cars were observing the area carefully as they approached the two teams lying in ambush. At that moment, they heard rumbling sounds ahead of them, and they saw another motorcade coming from the other side of the road.

Their attention was immediately drawn over, and they became highly alert as they drove faster toward the motorcade.

Right then, they heard rustling from their Realm Passes. This wasn’t a communication failure due to them being too far away from their domain entity, but because they had run into a domain interference entity.

Something was off about the new arrivals.

They immediately sent a telegram to people in the back.

At that moment, bioweapons jumped out from behind the railing of the public road. They were combat praying mantises from Compound Eyes.

In no time, they were in front of the two cars. Their sharp raptorial forelegs came swinging down, but before they could touch the cars, they were cut off and fell on the road like rotten fruit.

The bioweapons leading the charge slid off the cars and were crushed under the fortified tires. With a loud squelch, they were smushed to bits. Their blood and interstitial fluid spilled all over the road.

The cars sent by the Cult Investigation Bureau had solid armor and rituals painted on the walls. Once they were activated, any living being that got close would have their physical and mental states affected. Hence, even with the bioweapons charging at them, the drivers remained calm.

Soon, their expressions changed, though. More combat praying mantises jumped out, and behind them were martial artists holding sabers and wearing goggles and protective armor. They also had implants all over their bodies.

One of the more agile ones landed in front of them and lifted his hand up high.

The driver grimaced and tried to steer the car away, but the person appeared right in front of them and swung his saber down.

The car was cut apart like wet paper. It moved forward a little more before toppling to the sides.

The motorcade was reflected on the person’s goggles. He brandished his saber, and the martial artists and bioweapons charged past him to attack the motorcade in the distance.
